In order to maintain an open view of the water, the typical pruning technique is to trim mangroves into a hedge. Mangroves are hardwoods and thus, it is our recommendation that mangroves be pruned similar to terrestrial trees, that is, prune the mangrove with a high canopy. By considering the placement of each mangrove relative to buildings and docks, a high canopy will frame and enhance a great view of the water.

Because natural regeneration cannot occur along most seawalls, the mangroves established with REM will be the only vegetation and natural habitat. Mangroves pruned with a high canopy also provide shade along the shoreline or seawall that will provide for further enjoyment of the waterfront. Ultimately as the mangroves mature they create natural habitat, reduce turbidity and clean the water of a variety of pollutants.
